Euro-zone growth stumbles; Merkel says the euro’s future is unquestionable
Index shows a slowdown in euro-zone growth – A well-respected monthly survey shows that the rate of growth in Europe’s manufacturing and services sectors declined in June. The survey, known as the purchasing managers’ index (PMI), is closely watched by foreign exchange traders. It is produced by Markit, a London-based global financial information services company. The latest PMI came in at 56 compared to 56.4 in May and 57.3 in April. A PMI above the 50-level indicates growth. The slower pace of growth is expected to have a dampening effect on job creation. This effect, coupled with the expected belt-tightening by the British, French and German governments, will not go unnoticed in the forex marketplace.
Merkel foresees a stronger euro – The euro-zone rescue facility created in response to the Greek financial crisis has calmed down the situation regarding the euro, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said in a pre-G-20 interview. The rescue facility will provide the opportunity to address structural weaknesses in the euro-zone and its rules, she said. Merkel emphatically denied that Germans are critical of their adopted currency, a view that might surprise the average German as well as traders in the forex marketplace. Ongoing discussions are meant to strengthen the currency and not to fundamentally question it, Merkel said.
